Overview

Azure Traffic Manager is a DNS-based traffic load balancer that enables you to distribute traffic optimally to services across global Azure regions, while providing high availability and responsiveness. Traffic Manager uses DNS to direct client requests to the most appropriate service endpoint based on a traffic-routing method and the health of the endpoints. An endpoint can be any Internet-facing service hosted inside or outside of Azure. Traffic Manager provides a range of traffic-routing methods, such as priority, weighted, performance, and geographic, to suit different application needs.

✨ Key Features

  • Performance-based routing (lowest latency)
  • Geographic routing
  • Priority-based routing for failover
  • Weighted round-robin routing
  • Endpoint health monitoring
  • Nested Traffic Manager profiles
  • Support for Azure and external endpoints

🎯 Key Differentiators

  • Native integration with the Microsoft Azure ecosystem.
  • Multiple flexible routing methods.
  • Ability to manage both Azure and external endpoints.

Unique Value: Optimize global application delivery and ensure high availability for services hosted in Azure and beyond through intelligent, DNS-based traffic routing.

🎯 Use Cases (5)

Improving application performance by routing to the closest endpoint. Ensuring high availability with automatic failover. Distributing traffic for maintenance without downtime. Geo-targeting for data sovereignty and localization. Hybrid-cloud and on-premises failover.

✅ Best For

  • Directing users to the Azure region with the lowest network latency.
  • Failing over an entire application to a secondary region during a regional outage.
  • Serving different content to users based on their geographic location.

💡 Check With Vendor

Verify these considerations match your specific requirements:

  • Layer 7 load balancing requiring SSL offload or URL-based routing (use Azure Application Gateway).
  • Internal load balancing within a virtual network (use Azure Load Balancer).
